Friday was an amazing day! We met up at the homeless shelter on 12th Avenue and Madison with Michael Reyes of PAZ Cantina. While Michael and his crew were preparing food, we handed out over 300 pairs of socks to the homeless people in that area. With each person receiving a new pair of socks, that is over 300 homeless people that now have brand new socks.
When we were done handing out socks, we helped PAZ Cantina hand out over 400 burritos to the hungry homeless people that were patiently waiting in line. Even with the horrible situation that these people are in, they were so happy to have new socks and freshly made food. There were so many happy faces and smiles; amazing, considering what some of these people go through on a daily basis. I think new socks and freshly made food aren’t going to fix their lives, but it will help make it more bearable, and that’s a good thing. I’ve found that by taking the time to just talk to some of these people, looking them in the eye and genuinely listening to what they have to say, it really means a lot. So many of them are on the edge, so many have nothing left, and something as simple as a quick chat and a handshake or a hug, really goes a long way.
After we were done handing out all of the socks and food, I went over to KTAR News radio and did an interview that they had asked me to do to explain our cause.
If you would like to help, PAZ Cantina is currently offering a free taco to anyone that donates socks. So bring a packaged pair of new socks down to their restaurant and help out! PAZ Cantina is located at 417 E Roosevelt St Phoenix, Arizona.
Thank you to everyone that has donated socks and/or money to our cause, we will be doing this again next week!
