Which American States Drive the Most Trucks?

Used Trucks Can Be Found All Over the United States

Check the vehicles on the lot of any used car dealership in the country, and you’ll instantly realize one thing—Americans love trucks. The capability and versatility of trucks make them a good option for families, and trucks have become impressively economical on gas over the past 15 years, often surpassing passenger cars for combined mileage-per-gallon.

According to iSeeCars.com, pickup trucks make up just over 15% of the vehicles on America’s roads. But it’s also true that some states favor trucks much more than others. So, which states have the highest percentage of trucks on the road today?

States With the Highest Percentage of Trucks in the U.S.

It should be no surprise that mountainous and Northern states have the highest percentage of trucks on the road. Wyoming is the clear winner, with 37.2% of the vehicles on the road being trucks. This is likely because of the rugged terrain and often unpaved roads of the state. The streets of Montana and Idaho aren’t too far behind, as one of every three vehicles you’ll see there is a truck.

Other states where trucks are particularly popular include Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont, and Oklahoma. Of the top 10 states for pickup sales, 9 are landlocked. Only Alaska bucks this trend.

It’s thought that the high prevalence of pickup trucks in non-coastal states coincides with the regions being more likely used for farming. Trucks are a virtual necessity for these jobs. Another reason is that coastal states are often more temperate than landlocked states, making passenger cars more practical and popular.

Note that Texas is the state that sells the most trucks in the U.S., but Texas buyers choose a more diverse range of vehicles. Only 19% of vehicles on Texas roads are trucks.

New Jersey is the state you’re least likely to buy a truck in, with just 7.8% of the vehicle there a truck. This is followed by Connecticut, Maryland, and California, all relatively flat states.
